Conducting

Conducting ELISION Ensemble, 2013

Aaron Cassidy’s work as a conductor has spanned a broad range of historical and contemporary repertoires in both chamber and orchestral settings, encompassing diverse stylistic and notational approaches, jumping from Brahms to Jürg Frey, Bernstein to Webern, Anestis Logothetis to Steve Reich, Cardew to Mozart, including a significant number of world premieres.

He has appeared as a guest conductor with Ensemble Musikfabrik, ELISION, Ensemble Interface (then as IEMA), International Contemporary Ensemble, the Northwestern University Contemporary Music Ensemble, and in 2011 was the conductor for the ensemble works presented at the International Computer Music Conference. From 2008–13 he served as conductor of the University Symphony Orchestra and New Music Ensemble at the University of Huddersfield, where he has also supervised and mentored advanced undergraduate and postgraduate conducting students.

His earliest training was in choral conducting. As a young singer with the American Boychoir he often conducted the group in concert, and he was appointed Assistant Conductor of the Texas Boys Choir while still an undergraduate. He later held positions as Organist/Choir Director in Chicago and Buffalo while completing undergraduate and PhD degrees in composition, and served as the Assistant Conductor of the University Choir at SUNY Buffalo from 1998–99.

Much of his work as a conductor over the last 20 years has revolved around new music. In addition to frequent ad hoc projects with student ensembles, he was the conductor of Augenmusik, an ensemble specialising in open-form works and graphical notations, and was a frequent guest conductor for the June in Buffalo Festival. Often connected to his roles teaching composition at the University of Huddersfield and Northwestern University, as well as in various roles as an invited guest for masterclasses and clinics, he has conducted numerous ensembles in performances of the works of young and emerging composers.

His conducting teachers have included Stephen Alltop, Erik Oña, and, as a participant in the 2009 Herrenhaus Edenkoben International Conducting Master Course, Zsolt Nagy and Peter Eötvös.
