Conducting

Conducting ELISION Ensemble, 2013

Aaron’s work as a conductor has spanned a broad range of historical and contemporary repertoires, encompassing diverse stylistic and notational approaches in chamber, orchestral, and choral settings.

He has appeared as a guest conductor with Ensemble Musikfabrik, ELISION, International Contemporary Ensemble, Ensemble Interface (as part of the IEMA Herrenhaus Edenkoben International Conducting Mastercourse), and the Northwestern University Contemporary Music Ensemble. From 2008–13 he served as conductor of the University Symphony Orchestra and New Music Ensemble at the University of Huddersfield, where he has also mentored advanced undergraduate and postgraduate orchestral conducting students.

While much of his work as a conductor over the last 20 years has revolved around new and experimental music, including leading a significant number of world premieres, his earliest training was in choral conducting. He was appointed Assistant Conductor of the Texas Boys Choir while still an undergraduate, and later held positions as Organist/Choir Director in Chicago and Buffalo while completing undergraduate and PhD degrees in composition, also serving as the Assistant Conductor of the University Choir at SUNY Buffalo from 1998–99. In addition to frequent ad hoc projects with student ensembles, he was the conductor of Augenmusik, an ensemble specialising in open-form works and graphical notations, and was a frequent guest conductor for the June in Buffalo Festival.

His conducting teachers have included Stephen Alltop, Erik Oña, Ilan Volkov, Zsolt Nagy and Peter Eötvös.
